Alihuen rural accommodation is a refurbished farm house in rural Chiloé. The house is surrounded with forest and tranquil farm land. Only minutes away is the River Chepu and a 10 minute drive takes you to the Pacific Ocean. There is a wood burning stove to keep you warm at night. The owners of the house live 200 meters away and the next neighbors are at half a kilometer so you´ll have all the privacy that you’d like.
Any time the owners are at the property they can provide guests with any information they need. Jeroen is a travel guide on Chiloé and can help with information about excursions, the best places to eat and what to do in the area. Upon reservation, let him know if you would like him to guide you around Chiloe. Alihuen offers 10 different sorts of tours and he will be glad to inform you about the different options (visit churches, penguin colonies and birds, gastronomy, artisania…) From the accommodation, it is also possible to access a 15km rountrip trail that goes through grasslands, forests, beaches and accesses the national park, ending at a penguin colony. In Chepu, the nearby town, you can rent some kayaks or go into the forest with a small wagon ride. You can go by car to Punihuil and take a small boat tour to see penguins. There is also a boat tour that offers rides up a nearby river.
Alihuen is above all a conservation and re-forestation project that aims to return exhausted pasture land into its native abundant and thriving forest to improve biodiversity and landscape connectivity in the region . They are rapidly approaching 24,000 trees planted and the effects are noticeable – the Pudu, the world’s second smallest deer and a relatively rare and shy creature, are regularly found on the property. Alihuen is truly land that connects and they extend that principle to local communities: it acts as a conduit and inspiration for artists, students, agrarians, artisans and the community at large. They work through an exchange system with their neighbors, exchanging milk, cheese, grazing land, jams, manual labor… These relationships extend to the tourists who come stay at Alihuen and you are encouraged to go visit these families, see their hand-made products, support the tour programs they offer and get to know them.
